MANPADS Trainer: How the Operator Training System Works
Which skills the operator drills, how the instructor runs the session, and how VARTA MANPADS implements this category.
Training a man-portable air-defense system operator requires practicing the full sequence of actions — from preparing the system and searching for an aerial target to tracking it, a simulated launch and reviewing the result.
A MANPADS trainer makes it possible to repeat these stages in a controlled virtual environment without expending live missiles. The instructor can change training conditions and aerial-target parameters while monitoring the exercise.
In the current VARTA.SYSTEMS range, this task is addressed by VARTA MANPADS, a VR trainer for FIM-92 Stinger, Igla 9K310 and Piorun operators. It continues the development of training solutions previously presented as the T1 Trainer, including the T1 complex for MANPADS operator preparation.
What a trainer for MANPADS operator preparation is
A MANPADS trainer reproduces the operator’s workflow in a virtual environment. Instead of using a live missile, the operator works with a training mockup while aerial targets, surroundings and the simulated-launch result are modeled by software.
This format makes it possible to repeat an exercise, change its conditions and gradually increase its difficulty.
VARTA MANPADS uses VR goggles with a 360° view, together with mockups of the FIM-92 Stinger, Igla 9K310 and Piorun.
Which operator stages can be practiced
Operator preparation is not limited to the launch moment. The preceding actions must be performed in sequence, with the aerial target correctly detected and tracked.
VARTA MANPADS training covers battery activation, system preparation, aerial-target search and lock-on, determining required input data, aiming and tracking.
The operator then performs a simulated launch of a guided anti-aircraft missile. The exercise ends with results analysis and a debrief of the operator’s actions with the instructor.
The trainer therefore practices the complete sequence required during MANPADS training rather than one isolated action.
Training Stinger, Igla and Piorun operators
Different man-portable air-defense systems have their own controls and preparation procedures, so training needs the corresponding mockup.
VARTA MANPADS supports three systems: the US FIM-92 Stinger, Igla 9K310 and the Polish Piorun.
The mockups work with the VR environment and software, combining the operator’s physical actions with a virtual aerial situation.
The system type for a session is selected according to the training task and complex configuration.
How the aerial situation is modeled
Repeating the same target under identical conditions is not enough. The training environment must change so the operator works through different scenarios.
In VARTA MANPADS, the instructor can set terrain type and operator position, and change aerial-target characteristics such as type, distance and speed.
The environment can model different times of day and weather, including day and night, rain, fog and wind.
These parameters support different exercises without changing the core hardware.
The instructor’s role in MANPADS training
The instructor manages the session through the trainer software, setting exercise parameters, environmental conditions and target characteristics for the task.
During the scenario, the instructor monitors the operator. A demonstration screen can show the situation seen through the operator’s VR goggles.
After the exercise, the results support a debrief. Training therefore goes beyond the simulated launch to reviewing the operator’s sequence and repeating necessary episodes.
From the T1 MANPADS Trainer to VARTA MANPADS
The solution for training man-portable air-defense operators was previously presented as the T1 Trainer Complex for MANPADS operator preparation.
The T1 Trainer name belongs to an earlier line of training systems whose experience and development continue in modern VARTA.SYSTEMS solutions.
Today, the solution for this training direction is presented as VARTA MANPADS. It prepares FIM-92 Stinger, Igla 9K310 and Piorun operators in VR, from system preparation through simulated launch and result analysis.
The historical search term T1 MANPADS Trainer and the modern name VARTA MANPADS therefore refer to one line of development, not two independent modern products.
VARTA MANPADS as a modern operator trainer
VARTA MANPADS is a VARTA.SYSTEMS training complex for man-portable air-defense operators in a 360° VR environment.
The complex supports aerial-target search and identification, determining input data, preparing the mockup, aiming, tracking and a simulated launch.
The confirmed configuration includes FIM-92 Stinger, Igla 9K310 and Piorun mockups, VR goggles, a computer, a TV on a stand and a transport container.
The session is supervised by an instructor who configures the scenario and analyzes the results after the exercise.
